The
Finno-Ugric peoples are the children of neither the sea nor the hills,
the steppes nor the deserts, the plateau nor the tundra, but of the
forests of the North. The forests and the Spirit of the North - it is
these that have shaped the character of the Finno-Ugric peoples through
the millennia, it is these which define not only our character, but our
inner strength (Oskar Loorits, Eestluse
elujoud, Stockholm 1951).
